Miriam, the town librarian, has just returned from her retirement celebration with her adult daughter, Laura. Miriam is somewhat quiet. Laura asks how she's feeling about the new library being named after the man who donated the land instead of after her, the person who built the library up from nothing. Miriam?with typical humility?says she feels the honor should go to the landowner, but we know she feels somewhat hurt. Just then, a man stops by who was a student years ago in that town. Miriam had encouraged him to read and helped him discover and find help for his dyslexia. He has now written a book about teaching children to love literature and dedicated it to Miriam. Deeply touched, she realizes she has invested her life in a significant way. He signs the book for her, and they embrace as the lights fade.
