"The pictorial quality of the whole poem is an eye-opener. There is always a tendency, on the part of his detractors, to make of Solzhenitsyn something less than he is, but here is further evidence that he is something more than even his admirers thought." - Clive James, New Statesman

Translator:
Conquest, Robert
Born in 1917, Robert Conquest, along with Philip Larkin, Kingsley Amis. Thom Gunn and others, was a leading member of the so-called Movement. After distinguished service in the war, he became a diplomat and served as Margaret Thatcher's speechwriter. He is perhaps best known for his work as a historian, being one of the first to expose the whole truth about the Soviet regime.
