The Prophet was aspiring to teach the Muslims important lessons about religion and life alike. These lessons could be summed up as follows: The Muslim's blood is inviolable to each other Muslims. This means that Muslims are prohibited to fight each other. When the Prophet (PBUH) sends an expedition to the enemies, he would order Muslims to treat the elderly, women, and children well. Even in fighting (Jihad) in the cause of Allah and fighting enemies, there was an avoidance of the blood-shed. Let alone the sanctity of the Muslims' blood to each other which is more strictly prohibited.
