This volume is a collection of papers from the Second Catalan Symposium, held in October 1991, under the sponsorship of the Center for Catalan Studies at The Catholic University of America. Contributions were made by Patricia J. Boehne, Peter Cocozzella, Manuel Duran, Roberto J. González-Casanovas, Suzanne S. Hintz, C. Raymond La Fontaine, Kathleen McNerney, Charles J. Merill, Antoni Torres-Alcalà and Josep M. Solà-Solé, the editor. All the papers focus on the topic Tirant lo Blanc: Text and Context , analyzing various aspects of the Catalan masterpiece: consideration of the generic status of Tirant both as a medieval romance and in the light of modern theories of the novel; its daring treatment of sexuality; references on a new and more complete English translation; the scholarship on the novel in the past 50 years; and finally, a comprehensive bibliography. This volume is dedicated to the memory of Father Pere Masdevall i Busquets, Sch. P., who, aside from teaching Spanish at the former Calasanctius School in Buffalo, also taught for many years at the summer Course in Valencia of The Catholic University of America.
