Dr. Betty Horwitz is a speech-language pathologist in private practice in New York City and, for the past 10 years, has been an adjunct professor at New York University where she received an award for teaching excellence. She received a B.A (Speech Pathology) from the University of Michigan, an M.A. (Speech Pathology) from Kean University in New Jersey, and an M.A. (Developmental Psychology) and Ed.D. (Speech Pathology) from Columbia University. In addition, she has postdoctoral training in child and adolescent psychology at the New Hope Guild in New York and in psychophysiology and biofeedback with the Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback (AAPB). She is among the inaugural cadre of fluency specialists with ASHA, a contributor to the ASHA Prevention Manual, and a member of the Education and Performance Arts Psychophysiology Sections of AAPB.
Dr. Horwitz has worked in rehabilitation centers, schools and clinics with varied speech, language and voice disorders and has been on the faculty of the Communication Disorders Departments of the City College of New York, Southern Connecticut State University and, more recently, Touro College in Brooklyn, New York. She has also been a consultant and trainer in the private sector and with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for whom she developed a widely used program and textbook on Leadership and Oral Communications. Her experience and special interests in human development, stuttering and voice led Dr. Horwitz to explore the effects of anxiety on oral communications which she has written about and lectured on nationally and internationally (in the USA and abroad).
