Cette histoire de survie, d'amour entre une mère et son fils et d'espoir face à des épreuves indicibles décrit le périple extraordinaire de Peter, un garçon de cinq ans, à travers l'Europe déchirée par la guerre en 1944 et 1945.

Peter et ses parents quittent leur petite ville hongroise et traversent ensemble l'Autriche puis l'Allemagne. En chemin, des images inoubliables de leur aventure défilent les unes après les autres: les nuits passées sous la tente puis à la belle étoile, l'usine de briques désaffectée, la chasse aux papillons dans les prés, puis viennent celles des bombes qui tombent du ciel bleu aux portes de Vienne, les leçons de mathématiques données par sa mère dans le camp de concentration de Bergen-Belsen. C'est alors que Peter réalise que cette aventure est en réalité un cauchemar.

Tous ces événements se déroulent sur fond de terreur, de famine, de maladies et, inévitablement, de mort, jusqu'à ce que Peter et sa mère puissent enfin rentrer chez eux.

A story of survival, of love between mother and son, and of enduring hope in the face of unspeakable hardship, this graphic memoir describes an extraordinary journey, made by Peter, a boy of five, through war-torn Europe in 1944 and 1945.

Peter and his parents set out from a small Hungarian town, travelling through Austria and then Germany together. Along the way, unforgettable images of adventure flash one after another: sleeping in a tent and then under the sky, discovering a disused brick factory, catching butterflies in the meadows, and--as Peter realises that this adventure is really a nightmare--watching bombs falling from the blue sky outside Vienna, learning maths from his mother in the Belsen concentration camp.

All this is drawn against a background of terror, starvation, infection, and, inevitably, death, before Peter and his mother can return home.
