The Inheritors is a novel written by William Golding, the author of Lord of the Flies. The Neanderthals, who are portrayed as more peaceful and in tune with nature, struggle to understand the language and behavior of the Homo sapiens, who are portrayed as more violent and aggressive. The story is told from the perspective of Lok, a Neanderthal who becomes close with one of the Homo sapiens, a woman named Fa. As the two groups interact, tensions rise and violence ensues, ultimately leading to the downfall of the Neanderthals. Golding, William
Born in Cornwall, England, William Golding started writing at the age of seven. Though he studied natural sciences at Oxford to please his parents, he also studied English and published his first book, a collection of poems, before finishing college. He served in the Royal Navy during World War II, participating in the Normandy invasion. Golding's other novels include Lord of the Flies, The Inheritors, The Spire, Rites of Passage (Booker Prize), and The Double Tongue.
