Il s'agit d'une correspondance adresse au juge d'instruction Hatton, dans laquelle l'auteur dfend M. Libri, accus de vol de livres rares  la Bibliothque royale de France. Lacroix y expose les preuves qui dmontrent l'innocence de M. Libri et dnonce les erreurs et les manipulations de l'enqute. Cette affaire a suscit un grand scandale  l'poque, car M. Libri tait un minent savant et bibliothcaire, respect dans le monde scientifique.
