Description
Jerusalem Delivered is an epic poem written by Torquato Tasso in the late 16th century. The poem tells the story of the First Crusade and the Christian siege of Jerusalem in 1099. The poem is divided into twenty cantos and is written in ottava rima, an Italian verse form consisting of eight lines per stanza. The poem follows the exploits of various Christian knights, including Godfrey of Bouillon, Tancred, and Rinaldo, as they battle against the Muslim defenders of Jerusalem. Along the way, they encounter various mythical creatures, including sorceresses and dragons, and engage in epic battles against impossible odds. The poem is also notable for its romantic subplot, which involves the love triangle between the Christian knight Tancred, the Muslim princess Clorinda, and the Christian maiden Erminia. The poem explores themes of love, honor, and religious devotion, and is considered one of the greatest works of Italian literature. Jerusalem Delivered has been translated into numerous languages and has inspired operas, plays, and other works of art.
