Description
Measure for Measure is a play written by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written in 1603 or 1604. The play is set in Vienna and explores themes of justice, morality, and mercy. The Duke of Vienna decides to take a leave of absence and puts his deputy, Angelo, in charge. Angelo is a strict and moralistic man who decides to enforce the city's long-dormant laws against fornication and adultery. Claudio, a young man, is arrested and sentenced to death for impregnating his fiance before they were married. Claudio's sister, Isabella, a novice nun, pleads with Angelo for mercy, but he offers her a deal: he will spare her brother's life if she agrees to sleep with him. Isabella is torn between her loyalty to her brother and her religious beliefs. The play follows the characters as they grapple with questions of justice, morality, and mercy. It is considered one of Shakespeare's ""problem plays"" because it does not fit neatly into the categories of comedy or tragedy.Teach her the way: oh, heauens Why doe's my bloud thus muster to my heart, Making both it vnable for it selfe, And dispossessing all my other parts Of necessary fitnesse? This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Author:
Shakespeare, William
Arguably the greatest English-language playwright, William Shakespeare was a seventeenth-century writer and dramatist, and is known as the Bard of Avon. Under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth I, he penned more than 30 plays, 154 sonnets, and numerous narrative poems and short verses. Equally accomplished in histories, tragedies, comedy, and romance, Shakespeare s most famous works include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, The Taming of the Shrew, and As You Like It.
Like many of his contemporaries, including Christopher Marlowe, Shakespeare began his career on the stage, eventually rising to become part-owner of Lord Chamberlain s Men, a popular dramatic company of his day, and of the storied Globe Theatre in London.
Extremely popular in his lifetime, Shakespeare s works continue to resonate more than three hundred years after his death. His plays are performed more often than any other playwright s, have been translated into every major language in the world, and are studied widely by scholars and students.
