Augie is a young armadillo born in Sleepy Shallow, Louisiana, who dreams of dancing and playing the cello. He amasses the courage to stow away aboard an ocean liner headed for Rome. Along the way he makes some interesting friends and, of course, he is always under the vigilance of his secret guardian-the Wise Old Bird.
