Description
"CONTEMPORARY THOUGHTS ON THIRUKKURAL" sharply focuses on the need to study Thirukkural (the crown of Tamil philosophy) with a modern outlook, particularly in respect of societal perceptions on many contemporary developments like war and its devastating impacts, feminism or the lack of it in Tamil society, poverty as against charity and communal discrimination as a curse on the society. Five sections are devoted in this book to discuss in a crisp and fair-minded style. They are: 1) Preaching non-violence and clamoring for the annihilation of opponents in wars simultaneously 2) Praising the women while ignoring gender justice and equality in the male dominated society 3) Blaming begging while admiring charity 4) Neutrality with biased Discrimination in rendering Justice by the king 5) Communal supremacy and social equality . The book probes whether Thirukkural depicts any such self-contradictory preaching in a lucid discussion that leads to a logical conclusion in each of these 5 sections. Interestingly, the second part of this book attempts to provide the gist of the already short formed Thirukkural. 460 Kural Couplets accordingly render Proverbial Format to what are named "Kural Tharum Kurumozhikal" - an entirely new concept aimed at both literate and less literate. All these are again arranged in Tamil alphabetical order with additional information on the respective adhikaaram (chapter name) in Table . Sure, young and old as well shall find it quite easy and interesting to remember and, to quote instantly, Kural philosophy on appropriate occasions. In sum, the book brings out in a refreshing language certain new dimensions of Thirukkural in the context of an ever changing world - a candid work to evince interest among the lovers of Tamil and Tamil literature .
