Narumi and Emi are identical twins, both studying piano from an early age. One day their piano teacher discovers that Narumi is not hearing well, and Narumi takes this opportunity to quit playing. Emi, however, decides to pursue a music degree at an art university upon newly discovering that their mother, who died soon after she delivered her twins, was a pianist. Narumi secretly wonders who Emi is really studying for.

During this time, and while exploring her grandmothers' old house, Narumi discovers an ancient document. What was recorded in this document is an incredible account of the family's relationship to piano playing going back many generations. It becomes apparent to Narumi that her mother had spent her entire short life attempting to fulfill the grandmothers' ultimate dream.

Meanwhile, Emi disappears from her art university. Narumi then begins a quest to find Emi using clues from the ancient document, and what she finds is utterly unexpected......
