Witte was born in Germany and grew up in Madrid, Spain. She moved to the United States in 1984 as an exchange student. Since completing her doctorate in Spanish and Latin American literature at the University of Texas at Austin, she has taught at different colleges and universities in the USA and in Mexico. She teaches at Seattle University.
