The CD-ROM of the first edition of Camoes s classic epic poem The Lusiads provides access for scholars and readers to most of the surviving copies of the first edition (1572) of the epic poem, The Lusiads Os Lusiadas], one of the classic works of world literature. It reproduces for the first time 29 exemplars provided by libraries and collections from eight countries on three continents. These are now available on the CD-ROM published by Portuguese Literary & Cultural Studies of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, and each may be read consecutively as a book, from beginning to end, Readers of The Lusiads will now easily be able to read this classic work in its first edition. The aim of the CD-ROM is to make possible a comprehensive analysis of the first edition in all its variants, as a source of comparative study by scholars and appreciation by readers of Camoes."
