In Curse of Cairn Castle, an addition to the Sooty Wick series, thirteen-year-old Beetle returns to the Sooty Wick Inn in Hickory, Maine, to spend another summer as an intern with Murtha Bellwether, owner of the inn. Beetle's wish for a summer as exciting as the summer before is certainly answered.

The secret of the magic medicine deer, the future of the unicorn root plants, and the livelihood of the village's shops and owners are all in danger due to the newly opened Cairn Castle Hotel and its untrustworthy owner. To make matters worse, a search for the Imperium Stone, which may be hidden in the castle, could mean destruction of the world if the wrong searcher finds it.
