THE COMPENDIEUM OF THE DIVERSITY OF THE CLOTHES, first published in 1562, consists of a series of 121 figures, each described by a short quatrain. We present here the reproduction of the original figures and quatrains, with the transposition into modern French, and a translation for our English speaking friends. Beyond the beauty of the old engravings and the particular sound of the quatrains in old French, THE COMPENDIEUM informs us about the prejudices of the time and the morals in force, the author, Franois Deprez, having to comply with them in order not to incur the wrath of the authorities and the Church.
