Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly's Un pretre marie saw three editions during the author's lifetime: under the imprint of Achille Faure in 1865, Palme in 1874, and Lemerre in 1881. The latter version contained a number of errors and was never reprinted after its initial publication. The present edition is based on the 1874 text and includes, in addition to the main variations between the different editions, several handwritten pages of Barbey's novel.
