This study examines reputedly exemplary long novels from the seventeenth century onwards. Given that the authors of these novels were often also poets or playwrights, this work approaches the books from the point of view of generic hybridization, and considers the nature of the interwoven genres (history, letters, poetry, harangues, and digressions).
