Walter Krenkel is Professor of Materials Science at Bayreuth University, Germany. He studied aerospace technology in Stuttgart, then joined the German Aerospace Centre (DLR), where he directed the department of ceramic composites from 1996 on. Three years later, he took over the Centre of Excellence for ceramic lightweight composites while also pursuing his Ph.D. at Stuttgart University. He is very active in the German Materials Society (DGM) and also served as a reader on ceramic matrix composites at the Technical University of Chemnitz prior to his appointment in Bayreuth.
