Literariamente, tenemos aqui una de las ms in tensas producciones del teatro nacional. Lope supo conducir maravillosamente los hilos sentimentales que le ofrecia el episodio narrado en la crnica. Diversos chispazos heroicos van preparando el momento trgico en que los habitantes de la villa, sin flaquear, gimen bajo las cuerdas de la tortu ra. Pero esta suprema belleza, las mltiples si tuaciones de inters y el atractivo de los versos se manifestarn al lector sin necesidad de que el edi tor lo advierta.
