In the view of JCB Prize winner Khalid Javed, Ashar Najmi's first novel, Uss Ne Kaha Tha, represents a genuine pioneering work in the field of postmodern Urdu literature. His second novel, Sifar Ki Tauheen, is regarded as the inaugural philosophical novel in Urdu. Notable Urdu critics Atiqullah, Shafe Kidwai and Nasir Abbas Nayyar have produced a substantial corpus of critical writing on Ashar Najmi novels and his contributions to the genre of fiction writing.
