This volume deals with the Prediction versus Performance in Geotechnical Engineering which was the subject of discussion during the symposium held in Bangkok last December 1992. Among others, the presented papers deal with studies conducted in Japan, Italy, Malaysia, Korea, India, Thailand and Germany related to modelling and/or field investigation of flexible sluiceway, spliced piles, levee in the Po Delta, Italy, geogrid reinforcements, and mechanically stabilized earth in various kinds of soft and compressible soils. Also included are techniques on ground improvement and earth reinforcement such as geomembranes, vertical drains, micropiling; coal-ash treatment of asphalt subgrade; computer grouting; reinforced and steel grid mechanically stabilized embankments, and embankments of sand columns; testing of granular pavement with the Accelerated Loading Facility (ALF); analysis of rockfill dams; and earth structures, mines and slopes. Finally, included are investigations of the ground failures in Japan and Iran during earthquakes. It is hoped that the thirty two valuable papers will be of great use to researchers, academics, practitioners among civil engineers, geologists, and others who are interested in prediction and performance evaluation of geotechnical engineering structures.
