A selection of the early days of Urdu ghazals presented in this book is in keeping with their era. The poets of these ghazals held the status of teachers in their respective times. Therefore, it is a record of the journey of those who gave form to the thoughts of their era. It is not permissible to compare these ghazals with the great works of poetry of their time, as the decision of these works of art of their time has been in the hands of individual talent as well as circumstances and time. The different number of poems selected by different poets depends on the choice of the compiler rather than on any preferential basis.
