A Treasured Sculpture Park: The First Cemetery of Athens
| AUTHOR | Lydakis, Stelios |
| PUBLISHER | Melissa Publishing House (12/31/2017) |
| PRODUCT TYPE | Hardcover (Hardcover) |
Description
It has been 35 years since the first edition of the book on the First Cemetery of Athens and its adorned sculptures. A second edition was deemed necessary by the Panagiotis and Effie Michelis Foundation, not only because the books from the first edition were exhausted but also because, with additional text and images, a new edition could be more comprehensive. Among other efforts in this reissue, there was an attempt to expand the photographic documentation by including a reference to the motifs used by sculptors in the First Cemetery. These motifs have been utilized in the West or adapted in other Greek cemeteries. The connections with the patterns of Antiquity have been particularly emphasized, as the sculptural decoration of the First Cemetery essentially continues types, motifs, and ideas that were already aesthetically used and completed in Kerameikos, the Cemetery of Ancient Athens.
