Description

The existence of composite is not new. Composite materials have a long history of usage. They are one of the most advanced and adaptable engineering materials known to advanced society like ours. The word "composite" has become very popular in recent four-five decades due to the use of modern composite materials in various applications. The composites have existed from 10000 BC. The common composite was straw bricks, used as construction material. Composite materials are being developed to replace conventional materials for competitive reasons such as high specific strength and stiffness, high fracture toughness, good resistance to heat, cold, moisture and ease of fabrication, etc. Generally, a composite material is composed of reinforcement (fibers, particles) embedded in a matrix (metals, ceramics, and polymers). Reinforcement provides strength and rigidity, helping to support structural load. The matrix or binder (organic or inorganic) maintains the position and orientation of the reinforcement. When designed the composite materials properly, the new combined material exhibits better strength than would each individual material. There are two classification systems of composite materials. One of them is based on the matrix material and the second is based on the material structure.
