Author:
Dickson, Jennifer
Jennifer Dickson is an artist who works in several media. Trained as a painter at Goldsmith's College School of Art, London, she was associated between 1960 and 1965 with Stanley William Hayter's Atelier 17 in Paris. There she expanded her interest in etching to working extensively in colour. Since 1979 she has worked in photography, applying her images to colour xerography, etching, and serigraphy. In 1982 she realized, with the Still Photography Division of the National Film Board of Canada, an audio-visual presentation "Il Paradiso Terrestre." This has been screened in Canada and Europe. 1987 marked her first collaboration with her son, the film-maker Bill Sweetman, on a video of the life of Bianca Cappello.
Since 1979 she has been systematically documenting the major architectural gardens of Italy and England. This has led to a renewed interest in watercolour. In 1976 Jennifer Dickson was elected a Royal Academician. Though living in North America, she maintains active professional links with Europe. She is well-known as a lecturer on historic gardens and is presently head of art history at the Saidye Bronfman Centre.
