A Door Opens: Writing in Fifth Grade (Out of print)

AUTHOR Wilde, Jack
PUBLISHER Heinemann Educational Books (03/15/1993)
PRODUCT TYPE Paperback (Paperback)

Description

A Door Opens presents classroom writing practices--teaching poetry, fiction, report writing, persuasive writing, and writing across the curriculum--that Jack Wilde uses in his fifth grade classroom. It provides support, challenges, and points of reference for the reader's conceptualization of a writing classroom.

A Door Opens is an outgrowth of the two worlds Jack Wilde has inhabited for the past twelve years. First and foremost is the world of the public school classroom as a fifth grade language arts and social studies teacher. Second is the adult world of teacher education, specifically the New Hampshire Writing Program. These worlds complement each other: The public school teaching provides the experiences for him to reflect on and present in the summer writing program, and the writing program challenges him to consider and reflect on his classroom teaching. This book is a result of that process.

Author: Wilde, Jack
Jack Wilde is a fifth grade teacher during the school year and an instructor in the New Hampshire Writing Program in the summer. In his twenty-three years of classroom teaching, he has taught first through fifth grade. He studied at Cornell University, received an M.A.L.S. degree from Dartmouth College, and an M.Ed. degree from the University of Toronto. For the past fifteen years, Jack has done workshops and courses for a number of schools, school districts, and educational organizations. Early in his teaching career, Jack started helping student teachers develop teaching strategies: first giving workshops for student teachers at Dartmouth and in the Upper Valley Teacher Training Program, and then beginning in 1981 as a teacher of teachers in the N.H.W.P.
