AUTHOR Schmitt, Jrgen; Burbaum, Ulrich; Bormann, Antje
PUBLISHER Springer Vieweg (02/10/2025)
PRODUCT TYPE Hardcover (Hardcover)

Description

The book describes in detail and in a comprehensible manner the problems of subsoil exploration, the properties of soil and rock, earthworks and subsoil improvement, slope and ground failure, construction in groundwater and subsoil dynamics. These points are important basics for every construction site. The textbook's extensive illustrations make it particularly valuable for civil engineers and architects in their studies and practice. The book has been revised for the 20th edition and also includes the new DIN 14688 and 14689 standards. The chapters on subsoil, geotechnical investigations and soil parameters have been completely revised.

The first edition of "Grundbau" was published over 100 years ago in 1907. From the 15th edition in 1974, the work was divided into two volumes. Since the previous 19th edition of Part 1, which was published in 1994, the regulations have changed considerably and the methods for constructing foundation engineering structures have developed further. A comprehensive revision was therefore necessary.

Part 1 provides all the important knowledge required to understand the interactions between the subsoil and the structure. The book is intended to enable young engineers to recognize problems specific to foundation engineering and to provide them with proven solutions. Furthermore, the user is familiarized with earth static calculations and the relevant DIN standards.

The content

Concept and task of soil mechanics - The subsoil - Geotechnical investigations - Soil parameters - Water in the soil - Stresses in the subsoil - Strength and deformation properties of soils - Verification concepts/standardization in geotechnics - Earth static calculations - Earth pressure - Improving the properties of the subsoil.

The target groups

Students and practitioners in the fields of civil engineering, architecture and engineering geology

The author and authors

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Schmitt, Professor of Geotechnics, Tunnelling, CAD and Environmental Geotechnics at the Department of Civil Engineering at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Burbaum, Professor of Geotechnical Engineering, Geotechnics and Geology at the Department of Civil Engineering at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences

Dr. rer. nat. Antje Bormann, lecturer for special tasks in geology and geotechnics at the Department of Civil Engineering at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences

This book is a translation of an original German edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation.
